Mountain Devils News

This week sees 8 of our fellow MTB Orienteers competing in Poland at the 2008 MTBO World Championships.  They've been preparing diligently, participating in other World Ranking Events in Europe over the past few weeks, training camps, and lots of Polish cuisine (including some beer, I believe).

You can keep up with their achievements via the following websites:

You can comment on the team blog - I'm sure they'd love to hear from us back here in Oz.

I received a note from Darvo after he raced in Lithuania... he provided the map (see it here) and provided his course notes below. Check out leg 5-6!!...

G’day all,

Just thought it was long overdue for sending a bit of map action your way.  So here’s the long course from the Lithuanian 3-day.  Scale is 1:20,000 with 5 metre contours.  It’s not hilly.

A feature of Lithuanian course setting seemed to be a lot of big out and backs.  More than we use.  More than most

The forest was generally very pretty and the lakes fantastic.  A little on the cold side though.  At least from an Aussie view point.

Junctions are way less clear than we’re used to.  So even leg 1, which looks totally obvious, is a bit less obvious than it looks.  Combined with the up and down and winding, bumpy track, it actually seemed to be a bit tricky.  OK, perhaps I’m getting a bit carried away.  It just didn’t seem easy.

If you’re wondering which the best routes were then read on.  If you’re not, then you can stop reading now.

2, back out the way you came in and to the main road, into check point from the sw; 3, north out of 2 and in from north to 3; 4, back out to the north and in off the yellow east of #4, 5, no route choice; 6, back out the way you came, go almost past #3 and then back past the start and finish, either past 14 or stick on the main road (no difference in time) and so on; 7, either way around the lake, maybe a fraction faster to the east; 8, no choice; 9, same; 10, take the dotty track and go past the lake; 11, back out to the road; 12, another either or, perhaps a bit faster south of the lake; 13, out to road then right around on the good tracks; 14, no choice; 15, north and along the road (it was dirt incidentally); 16, 17 no choice; 18 almost to 14 and in; 19, back out the way you came in.

So there you have it!  Easy huh?
