SuperSeries Event #6 - 22 September 2007

Wingello State Forest - The LONG Sprint

The Official Report

Advertised as a sprint event, but planned as a middle distance event, SS6 was held on the south western end of the Wingello map, in an area only visited by long course riders and the Highland Fling in the last few years. Mass starts were combined with a combination of free choice and line course – the first few controls were free choice, followed by a line course to the finish.

A relatively small turnout – with only 50 riders registered – meant that there was plenty of parking space, and the starts weren’t too crowded. Rik Eagles had the laptop setup outside the little shed a local had kindly left by the side of the road some years before, and Carolyn Chalmers lent a hand with registrations.

Leanne Hart blitzed the short course, beating all the men home, whilst several newcomers had fun out in the forest – welcome to MTBO!

Jill McNaught made it a double for the women by winning the medium course, and beating the men’s winner, Graeme McLeod, by a bare five seconds, with Steve Richardson another nine seconds further back.

Katrin Van der Spiegel tried valiantly to make it an all female winning list, but our World Championship representatives would have none of that, with Paul Darvodelsky winning the long course from David Simpfendorfer, and Richard Mountstephens a few minutes further back. Katrin finished 5th overall on the long course, and 1st in the women’s category.

The Singlespeeder Perspective

Off to the event and we ended up at Forest Camp without a soul in site ... s***. Should have read the instructions on the entry form! Frantic phonecalls and Simon Nott finally got in touch. With some garbled code we managed to get to the event centre and start. Thanks Dave S for kindly starting to drive back to rescue us too!

The Mass start to the Long was fun. David West donned his Huw Kingston voice and sang out clear and bold instructions for those with the sense to listen (not the author). The flag was dropped and a blast up the fire trail. Lead out man was yours truly showing off on his singlespeed acceleration closely followed by our World Champ reps Larry and Darvo. By the time the tempo got up the geared guys rushed by and it was off to a long afternoon of pain and struggle.

Bill Kaloudis, on his first event, had an even tougher event having his Miry mapboard fall off within minutes of the start (I told him to get an R4 from Huw!) and riding a strategically difficult event with map in hand. To his credit (and his wife for telling him to "get back out there") he did not DNF and ended up with a 6th in Mens.

Jill started in typical post Oxfam trailwalker style with a bad sleep, a sore lower back and weak legs. But being a strategic event, she soon forgot her ailments and relished in blowing all medium riders away with an overall win of just 2 seconds over the best navigator in our group - Graeme McLeod. There is a rumour going around that Graeme has been training on the bike now in order to achieve his life’s MTBO dream - to beat Jill!!

For a 'sprint' event we were all knackered - all taking well over an hour to complete. I left everything out on the hills with the big gear and was grateful to get home, shower and eat anything.
