SuperSeries Event #4 - 24 June 2007
Sandy Creek, Near Awaba
After two weeks of torrential rain and storms, the email inbox was full of questions about whether the event would proceed. We trusted the weather gods, and were blessed with a fine day after some early morning drizzle whilst Denis Lyons was putting out the controls. Of course, with all that rain and wind, the tracks had a few interesting moments. Slippery clay, lots of puddles and mud wallows, and branches down on much of the singletrack. But that just added to the interest (and delight for some)!
Denis once again delivered us a fascinating set of courses. Two maps for the Medium course, and three maps for the Long course, with the added bonus of a map change quite close to the Finish, so that the watchers could see the look on riders’ faces as they confronted the final map. Mountain Devils is very grateful to Denis and Newcastle Orienteers for their assistance in staging this event.
The tracks made for somewhat slower times than normal – so that Hamish Mackie’s time of 140.31 to win the Male Long course was a great ride. He was almost pipped by Stu Adams – due to bike failure, Stu was forced to dump his bike at the map change and run the last 11km of the Long course! Whilst his time won’t count for SuperSeries points, we think it was a great effort.
On the Medium course, John Seidel rode an excellent time of 90.50 to beat local Geoff Todkill by just over 4 minutes.
Local lad Jamie van Netten rode his bike from home, and then flew around the Short course to beat everybody else back! Then he rode home as well.
Carolyn Haupt was first home on the Female Long course; Sandra Thomas was first on the Female Medium course; and Lisa Punzet was first on the Female Short course.
Thanks to Denis Lyons for a great set of courses, and for putting out the controls and collecting most of them himself. Thanks to all those who helped, or offered to help, today. I must confess to being a little embarrassed to ride into the Finish to find everything packed up and nearly all the controls collected. A great effort from all of you. Special mention to Anne Mackay for dealing with registrations and finishes all day – on her first outing to a MTBO event since marrying me! A big hand for Phill Frisardi, Rod Clark and Rob Prentice who helped with set up, and for Phill and Tim Hackney, who helped with results and finishes. Thanks also to Lindsay and Leanne Hart who helped pack up. Jiri Cech took his 4WD out to test out some of the tracks collecting controls. And then there was the Newcastle contingent. Keith ran the start with Denis Lyons all morning – thanks so much. Geoff Peel helped out with briefing new riders before dashing off to prepare for JWOC. Not to mention several others whose names I failed to remember. Finally, thanks to Rik Eagles for handling entries before and immediately after his recent major operation – get well soon Rik – we miss your cheerful energy.
