Report from the perspective of a new Singlespeeder

Another weekend and another excellent MTBO in the NSW super series.

A beautiful day for riding at Penrose – 14 degrees or so when we arrived with pristine blue sky. Bit of a South Westerly breeze which was cool but it wafted the lovely scent of Jiri’s fire over the start line.

Turned up with my family and for a change a single speed - Rob’s splendid little Baum Espresso. The single speed was designed as a test as to what they are like to ride as well as an excuse for expected poor form after only two gentle rides since the Dirtworks 100. The moment I pulled the little beast off the roof it was greeted with admiring glances and a few questions and within minutes I also found a cold bottle of Coopers Pale Ale (My favourite) being forced into my hand by an enthusiastic David West who was having his bucks weekend! David was also chomping down on a Coopers as was the third single speeder at the meet, Matty Chan.

Once Jilly had raced off with Keef and the field had all but gone Callum seemed to have found some great friends in Jiri’s kids so I decided to have a go myself. Beer was downed, a bit of a water as a chaser, one water bottle in the cage (that should do it!), gu under the knicks and off I go.

The bike was sweet – the trails had been groomed and it just craved to be pushed on the hills.

Not far into it and I caught Hamish Mackie who had a few brain explosions early on. Halfway through the very long course and I had caught David West and Matty Chan. Hamish ended up getting past at that point but we regrouped after he made a few poor route choices. Matty and I swapped riding at the front after testing different approaches to checkpoints with Matty having better legs on the steep bits. Eventually after all water was consumed and gu eaten I rushed back with all the spin I could muster staying ahead of Hamish and Matty on the gentle descent. They both caught me on the final hill as I had to bail due to cramps. I was going hard but they seemed to be enjoying the ride a bit more!

Hamish got away with his gears but he couldn’t make up the 2 minute gap from the start finishing a minute down on my time. Matty and I had a little sprint to the finish punching at the same time but Matty was about 30minutes down due to some big mistakes early on.

Well that was a long MTBO – all out of food and water for a long time - bloody 2hrs 50 minutes for me. Matty’s speedo clocked up 55Kms for the Long.

At the finish tent Rik thought I had done a very good time….I started to get excited! I had beaten Hamish but had I beaten my other geared friends…? Chris Schulz and Simon Nott – Beaten (Oh, the gloating…), Niklas – Beaten. Patrick Dellagiacoma - Beaten (he beat me at the Dirtworks by 45 minutes). Oh my god almost everyone except Hugh Stoddard, Darvo, Mountie, Darrie (only1 minute down!!) and some other bloke! 6th Overall !! This Single Speed thing Rocks!!!

Jill, Keef and Graeme finished with the same time with only seconds separating them – Graham came out trumps beating Jill for the first time in a long time with Keef holding up the tail.

What a competition and what a tough event!
