Yellowmundie

 

Sunday dawned cool and overcast with a small threat of showers. A perfect day for MTBO!

Once at Yellomundee the heat and humidity rose quickly and competitors in the Western Sydney MTB races held prior to our event were dripping with sweat, as were the course setters!

Recent rains had almost smothered the tracks and open areas in the northern section of the Yellomundee map with tall, itchy grass, lethal lantana and nasty stinging nettles. The rains had rutted some of the single track too and hidden these ruts with the long grass, just to provide a little more riding pleasure !

Sport Ident was used to control all the courses which were ‘start when ready’ in an allotted window of time. The participants were greeted with a tricky start having an immediate option of wading through some of the thick, tall grass.

Other tricky options on course included control ‘rosettes’ where orienteers had to ride loops returning to a central control before heading off again.

The fine and interwoven network of tracks and trails, some a little technical, and the tricky navigation proved to be solid work and popular for most riders but a little ‘too challenging’ for some. The large number of participants also made for an occasional tight ‘moment’ on the single track as well!

Due to a calendar clash with WSMTB an alternative rego, start and finish point had to be selected for this event and will probably change to our preferred, more open area when we return.

And we will return as the day proved to be successful and enjoyable after all!
