An awesome weekend was had by all on one of the best (and sadly, the last) Astleys Tower course. The results can be found here.

NSW State Champs 26-27 July 2008

The worst-kept secret in the club is now out.

This year's NSW State Champs are to be held just south of Nowra, in the Currambene / Nowra State Forests. The map is a brand new MTBO map prepared last summer by Andrew Slattery, mapper for the 2007 National Champs at Astleys Tower, and organiser of the 2009 National Champs in South Australia. The word is that Nowra will be much friendlier than our 2007 State Champs venue Lidsdale. That is - the hills are much lower!! There's also some excellent winding singletrack courtesy of the South Coast mountain bike club SCUM.

We're currently planning to run a sprint event on the afternoon of Saturday 26 July, with the main event on Sunday 27 July. All courses will be line courses, with allocated start times. We will of course be using SportIdent.

The State Championships are open to everybody - this year we will be giving riders the option of competing in their age-class for the chance of becoming a State Champion, or riding their normal course if they prefer. We're currently trying to finalise arrangements for camping - hopefully adjacent to the start/finish on Sunday - and will let you know details soon. Otherwise, there are lots of accommodation options in and around Nowra.

We recommend that you all start training now - but especially riders in the Men's Open class, because our National Team will already have left for Europe!! This might be your year to wear the State Champion's colours!

Farewell to Bill Chalmers

Mountain Devils sends its condolences to Carolyn Chalmers and her family following the death of Bill Chalmers last week. Bill was out riding in one of WA's National Parks when his heart failed. We will miss Bill's regular appearances - this season he had moved up to ride medium courses, and had turned in some fantastic times in the events to date.
